Rome, Part Four

Going back to Via del Corso and a few meters from the intersection with Via dei Condotti, one can admire the magnificent “Basilica dei Santi Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso” (St. Ambrose and Charles of the Corso). This Basilica is one of the Minor Basilicas of Rome and it stands out in this commercial and busy street because it sits a few meters back from via del Corso, in an angle that creates a small piazza or atrium in front of it. The building history of this church and in particular its façade is remarkable because it had multiple architects and design proposals over the course of its construction: It started under [...]

Rome, Part Three

Continuing walking north in the direction of the Piazza del Popolo, one cannot resist turning to the right at Via dei Condotti and look at this busy and fashionable street of Rome. This famous Via has been part of the history of the city, with interesting historical aspects such as its name; originally it was called TRIDENTE for being the junction point between Via del Corso and Piazza di Spagna. With the beginning of the” Modern Era of Rome” in the 15th -century, the old Via changes its name due to the expansion of the Acqua Vergine aqueduct and was called Via Condotta (the Conduct Street), later changed to Via Condotti. In the 18th -century the northern part [...]

Largo Di Torre Argentina

When I started working on this blog, I did it based on my travel records which area a few years old; however, I have the opportunity to visit Rome again recently and discovered that a few things have changed. One of those is the Largo Di Torre Argentina site. As explained in my first blog, this is a large open archaeological site with some column remains of a Roman temple that can be appreciated from the street level. The site is located next to one of the busiest roads in the city center (Corso Vittorio Emanuele II) and it was discovered by chance during the construction on of a new building in [...]

Rome, Part Two

In my first ARCHIVlog I gave you a brief tour of ancient Rome, listing my favorite monuments. In this second part, I want to tour the modern city; to do this, I will have to take Via del Corso, the main street in the city center, which cuts through the length of the city from the Piazza Venezia in the south to the piazza del Popolo in the north. This important “via,” originally called via Lata, was a main street in ancient Rome, built around 220 BC, was composed of four triumphant arches, and important buildings of ancient Rome. As the city grew, it was extended northward along this road. Around the year 1466 the name was [...]

Traveling is a way to learn architecture or, learning architecture by traveling?

I do not know where I read it, who said it or if I made it up, but I completely agree with this! I always liked to travel and especially since I had the opportunity to study in Italy, it was the ideal place to reinforce my taste for knowing the world. I went to study in the eternal city of Rome, the city with the greatest history in the world, where each of its streets and buildings are an open book full of stories to tell. I must say that it was “love at first sight”; from my arrival at the airport “Leonardo da Vinci” following the tour to the dormitory where I would stay; it was an [...]

My ArchiVlog

My ArchiVlog Since I was a child, my vocation was truly clear; I dreamed of impossible buildings, I built cardboard houses in the garden of my house, I played with big blocks of wood building big towers… I was determined about what I wanted to do for a living! So, I studied architecture at the University of la Salle in Bogota/Colombia; once I finished my architectural studies, I went to do a Master in Restoration of Architectural Monuments at the University of La Sapienza in Rome/Italy, starting this great adventure. My work beginnings came about “by sheer chance “ as we usually say: Upon returning from Rome and visiting my parents’ house in Cartagena, without being [...]
